About this Project

The Eleventhstreet flightplanner was first released in 2001. It was originally intended for use by the Los Angeles ARTCC as a signup FlightBoard to promote inter ARTCC flights and to act as a pilot resource center for California Screaming. Once the data in the backend grew, a new interface was built to interact with it solely as a flight planner.

Over the years, use of the application has expanded from ZLA to include Oakland, Honolulu, Albuquerque, and Oakland Oceanic. On top of providing services for each of the 9 California Screaming events - the system has been used during various VA and ARTCC events - most notably Cross the Pacific2 and two of Denver's Rocky Rumbles.

At some point we set our sights higher and decided to create a system that could serve multiple ARTCC's as both a flight planning and event booking system. Early on in the development of Version 3 I learned that another developer was creating a similar system on the east coast using the same technologies. SIMATC (still in its early stages) was approached by Eleventhstreet to see if there was any interest in pooling our resources to come up with a national solution. SIMATC was not interested in partnering or working with anyone else for reasons unknown to this day - and seeing how there was much momentum behind that project we decided not to enter into direct competition (we in fact provided a dump of all of our data for their system as a show of support).

The SIMATC torch went out one day without warning, reason, or explanation some in 2004 leaving many of the large ARTCC's on the east coast without primary flight planning resources, and pilots wondering where to turn for preferred routes approved by each of VATUSA's centers.

Version 4 of this flightplanner hopes to fill that gap by providing a NATIONAL solution or prefered routes for each ARTCC in VATUSA.

Live Release

SimRoutes went live on January 1, 2005. As of the summer of 2006 we've already had half a MILLION visitors and half a MILLION searches performed. 30 Centers take part in the project including all 7 FIR's from Canada, and 22/23 facilities from the United States (only Anchorage is missing). SimRoutes has additionally been providing routes for the CuraƧao (TNCF) FIR since April 2005.

The system currently holds over 13,000 routes. These are not just routes "dumped" into the system from some other database, these are VATSIM preferred routings as entered and maintained by the individual Center's staff. SimRoutes would be nothing without the people who maintain the routes.

Features

The system currently allows users to search for flightplans between two airports, or all routes to/from a specific airport.

Users may filter the results by:

  • Type of Route: (High Altitude, Low Altitude, TEC, Military, Domestic, International)
  • Type of Operations: (All, Normal, or Alternate
  • RNAV Routes (based on RNAV status of DP/STAR)
  • Noise Abatement
  • Distance: (Longer/Shorter than XXX Nautical Miles)

User may sort the results by:

  • Origin
  • Destination
  • Route Type
  • Distance
  • Comments

On the flight plan details page users are presented with:

  • Links to ARTCC Websites
  • Links to Airport Charts
  • Metars for both Origin and Destination Airports
  • A flight plan to file online
  • A link to file the flightplan with the VATSIM through a web interface
  • Full comments and NOTAMS regarding this routing
  • NavLog - providing full waypoint printout with Frequencies, Headings, and Distance

More features for the future...

Below is a list of features in various stages of development:

  • Pilot Dispatch - e-mail your flightplan to yourself or to your friends
  • Search by ARTCC - Find all routes from a specific airport to any airport in an ARTCC (or vice versa)
  • Random Flight Dispatch - you set the criteria and the system assigns you a flight
  • On the fly creation of FSNAV, PIC, PSS, FS2000, and SB files for download

I'm interested in hearing anyone's feedback or ideas for this application. If you have a question about a feature or a suggestion about a new one please feel free to contact me.

During the course of this project I ask that you report ANY errors or anomalies you encounter while visiting the site.

I hope that this project really fills a void for all of my fellow VATSIM pilots and controllers alike on the network.

sincerely,
